Family Reunion Shirt Ideas: Designs, Colors and How to Order

Ten design ideas, a color plan that makes the group photo easy, layouts that fit the print area and a way to collect orders from relatives in different cities, with a sample order brief.

Family Reunion Shirt Ideas: Designs, Colors and How to Order

The short answer: the best family reunion shirts have one clear idea (the family name, a year or a place), lettering big enough to read in a group photo and a color plan. One color per family branch is the easiest to read in photos, and the same design for everyone keeps the order simple. Offer adult, women’s and youth sizes, and make names on the back optional.

If you are the one who got put in charge of the shirts, this guide gives you ten design ideas that work, a color plan, front and back layouts that fit the print area, a way to collect orders from relatives in different cities and a sample order brief to send us. It is written for Houston families and for the aunts, uncles and cousins who live in other states.

What makes a good family reunion shirt?

A reunion shirt has three jobs: be readable in a group photo, be comfortable all day and be easy to order from several cities. Designs that do all three share a few traits.

  • One idea. A name, a year and a place beat a paragraph.
  • Big, simple lettering. Photos are taken from a few steps back, and thin or tiny text turns into a gray line.
  • A color plan. Pick the shirt colors first, then check the design on each one.
  • Comfort for the day. For an outdoor reunion in the Houston heat, light and mid-tone colors and breathable fabric make a difference.

Ten family reunion shirt ideas that work

Pick the idea that fits your family. Each one is easy to read and easy to order.

  1. Family name and year. “The García Family Reunion, [year].” The year turns the shirt into a keepsake, and every reunion gets its own design.
  2. Where the family comes from. “From [hometown] to Houston” or “Roots in [country], home in Houston.” Short place names read best.
  3. Teams by branch. “Team Rosa,” “Team Miguel”: each branch takes the name of the sibling who started it. It pairs naturally with a color per branch.
  4. Generations. Grandparents, aunts and uncles, cousins (or abuelos, tíos, primos). A role on the back helps relatives find each other in a crowd.
  5. An “Est.” line. “Est. [year]” under the family name, using the year the family began or held its first reunion. Agree on that year before you print it; families do argue about this one.
  6. A family badge. A circle or shield with the initials or the family name. A simple badge prints cleanly at left-chest size (3.5 to 4 in).
  7. Funny roles. “Head Cook,” “Official Photographer,” “Domino Champion.” Let the family write the roles, keep them kind and print them on the back.
  8. Heritage colors. Blue and white for Honduras or El Salvador, green, white and red for Mexico, or two heritages in one design. Colors are safer than flags, because some countries have rules about how a flag or coat of arms may be used. For Honduran themes, see our Catracho pride shirt ideas.
  9. A family saying. The phrase everybody repeats at the table, in the language your family speaks at home. Ask the relative who is strictest about spelling to check it, accents included.
  10. One letter per person. For a lineup photo, each shirt carries one big letter and together they spell the family name. Each shirt needs its own file, so assign letters early and ask us whether it fits the size of your group.

Color plan: one color per family branch

Color is the quickest way to show the shape of a big family in a photo. These are the plans families use most:

PlanHow it looksBest for
One color for everyoneA clean uniform; branches shown by a name or number on the backSmall reunions and the simplest order
One color per branchEach family line wears its own color, so the photo shows the family treeLarger reunions with three or more branches
One shirt color, one accent per branchEveryone wears the same shirt; a stripe, badge or ink color marks the branchA single garment model that still shows the branches
Adults in one color, kids in anotherChildren are easy to spot in a crowdReunions with many children

Whichever plan you pick, check the design on every shirt color before anyone orders: a navy logo that looks sharp on a light shirt can vanish on a dark one, which is why we show a mockup on each color. Our guide to designing for dark and light garments explains how to choose design colors. The colors available depend on the shirt model, so check the product page or ask us.

Front and back layouts that fit the print area

A layout is a decision about what goes where. These five cover most families:

LayoutFrontBackWhy it works
ClassicSmall badge or initials on the left chestFamily name and year, largeThe back carries the message and the front stays clean
BillboardFull-front designPlainThe simplest to approve and order
Roll callFamily nameThe branches, or a family tree sketchGives people something to read and talk about
PersonalThe same design for everyoneFirst name, nickname or roleEvery shirt is different
Year on the sleeveAny layout aboveAny layout aboveKeeps the year without crowding the design

Print width on the front or back runs from 10.5 in on a small to 14 in on a 3XL (adult unisex). A left-chest print is 3.5 to 4 in wide and a sleeve print is 3 to 3.5 in, so text that small should be a name and a year, not a sentence. You send one design and we size the print for each garment size; see our T-shirt print size chart.

Sizes for every age

A reunion has one of the widest size ranges of any group order, from babies to grandparents.

  • Adults and women’s cuts. Unisex tees such as the Gildan G500 Heavy Cotton work for most relatives. For a reunion outdoors, consider a cotton and polyester blend such as the Gildan G800 DryBlend 50/50. Offer a women’s cut as an option, since some relatives prefer a unisex fit.
  • Kids and teens. Use youth tees such as the Gildan G500B youth cotton tee. Youth sizes are not small adult sizes, and kids grow, so ask parents for the size the child will wear on reunion day, not today’s size.
  • Babies and toddlers. Ask us whether infant or toddler sizes exist for the garment you want. Do not assume.
  • Older relatives. Ask for their size instead of guessing, and lean toward a relaxed fit.

Our guide to unisex, women’s and youth fit shows how to measure, and how many of each size to order covers the count.

How to collect orders from relatives in different cities

  1. Build one form. An online form or a shared sheet with name, cut, size, quantity, name on the back (optional), city and a WhatsApp number.
  2. Share it in the family group chat and name a captain for each branch who chases their own relatives. People answer a cousin faster than a general announcement.
  3. Set a deadline and a payment rule, and say what happens to requests that arrive after it.
  4. Check the sheet once for duplicates, blanks and typos, then total it by cut and size.
  5. Send us the order brief below, with the list attached. Our step-by-step plan for ordering shirts for a group covers the count and the mockup in more detail.

We offer local pickup in Houston and shipping across the U.S. Relatives in Texas can pick up their shirts when they come to town. For other states, the simplest plan is to ship everything to the organizer, or to one person at the reunion, who hands the shirts out. If you want pieces mailed to different addresses, ask when you request the quote. We ship within the U.S., so shirts for relatives abroad have to travel with someone.

Beyond the shirt: tumblers and a framed photo

Some families add one keepsake to the shirt. Two that work well:

Work backwards from reunion day

Families need time to agree, so start as soon as the date is set. Counted from the end:

  1. Reunion day. Write it down first.
  2. Shirts in your hands, with a margin for a missing size or a shipping delay.
  3. Production. Most standard orders are ready in 2–5 business days after you approve the design. Larger or more complex orders may need more time, and the quote confirms the date.
  4. Mockup approved. You set this speed: reply fast and send one list of changes.
  5. Order brief sent, once the list is final.
  6. Sign-up deadline, announced in the family chat.
  7. Design chosen. In a big family this is often the longest step.

Shipping to relatives adds carrier time after production. If your date is tight, message us on WhatsApp first: selected items may qualify for rush production depending on workload and artwork readiness.

How we help with family reunion shirts

Send us the family name, the date and your idea, even if it is only a sentence or a photo of a sketch. We prepare the print-ready file, create the design if you need one and show a mockup on each shirt color you are considering. Nothing is printed until you approve it. Adult, women’s and youth sizes can share one order, and names can differ from shirt to shirt. Pick up in Houston or have everything shipped across the U.S., and write to us in English or Spanish. Start with our page for events and celebrations, see bulk orders for a big family, or ask for a free quote.

Frequently asked questions

What should a family reunion shirt say?

Keep it to one idea: the family name plus a year, a place of origin or a short family saying. Large, simple lettering reads best in a group photo. Add a role or first name on the back if you like, but make names optional so late joiners are not left out and spelling mistakes do not hold up the order.

How do I get everyone's sizes when relatives live in different cities?

Use one online form or shared sheet and share it in the family group chat. Ask for the cut (adult, women's or youth), the size, the quantity and an optional name for the back. Name a captain for each branch of the family to chase their own relatives, and set a deadline before you send anything to the studio.

Should each branch of the family wear a different color?

It helps. One color per branch makes the group photo show the family tree at a glance. It also means checking the design on every shirt color and managing one list per color. For a small reunion, or if you want the simplest order, one color for everyone works well.

Can relatives in other states get their shirts by mail?

We ship across the U.S. and also offer pickup in Houston. The simplest plan for a spread-out family is to ship the whole order to one person who hands out the shirts at the reunion. If you want pieces sent to several addresses, ask when you request the quote. Shipping adds carrier time after production.

How far ahead should I order reunion shirts?

Start as soon as the date is set, because agreeing on a design and collecting sizes often takes longer than printing. Most standard orders are ready in 2–5 business days after you approve the design, and larger orders may need more time. The quote confirms the date. For urgent dates, message us on WhatsApp first.
