Custom Hoodies: How to Choose a Hoodie or Sweatshirt to Print On

How to choose between a hoodie and a crewneck for custom printing, with a comparison of the fleece models we list, print placement around the pocket and drawcords, youth sizes and group-order tips.

Custom Hoodies: How to Choose a Hoodie or Sweatshirt to Print On

The short answer: for most custom hoodie orders in Houston, pick a mid-weight 50/50 cotton-polyester fleece. Our Gildan G185 Heavy Blend hoodie is the all-round choice, a crewneck is better when you want the most open space for a big chest design, and DTF is the print method that works on every color.

A hoodie looks simple until you hold one: the pouch pocket, the drawcords and the hood all take space from your design. This guide helps you choose between a hoodie and a crewneck, compares the models we list, shows where the design can go, and covers youth sizes and group orders.

Hoodie or crewneck: how to decide

Look and feelCasual, warmer around the neck, a hood to pull upCleaner and more uniform, no hood
Front print spaceSmaller: drawcords at the top and a pouch pocket at the bottomLarger: an open chest with no pocket
Back printStarts below the hood, which bunches at the neckOpen from the collar down

A simple tie-breaker: if the design is a big, wide chest print, choose a crewneck. If it is a small left chest logo with a larger design on the back, a hoodie works well.

Our hoodies and sweatshirts compared

The hoodies and crewnecks on our list are all 50/50 cotton-polyester fleece blends. Names like Heavy Blend, DryBlend, NuBlend and EcoSmart are each maker’s brand names for its own 50/50 fleece. So the choice comes down to the cut, the features and a few details on each product page, not to cotton versus polyester.

Sizes, colors and weights differ by model. Check the product page, and if anyone in your group wears a 3XL, confirm that the model comes in that size before you commit.

Most of these are cut in a classic fit, a regular rather than slim shape. A hoodie is often worn over other clothes, so people who like a looser feel sometimes choose one size up. If you are unsure, our guide to unisex, women’s and youth fit shows how to measure a hoodie you already own.

Weight and warmth: what Houston actually needs

Houston’s cool season is short and mild, with cold fronts that come and go. A mid-weight fleece is usually all you need. It is warm enough for a chilly morning and still comfortable in the air-conditioned offices, churches and classrooms where many hoodies spend most of the year.

A heavier fleece feels more substantial and keeps you warmer, which makes sense for outdoor work on cold mornings or for people who run cold. A lighter fleece is easier to wear on mild days. Where a product page lists the weight, compare it when two models look alike.

Where can the design go on a hoodie?

A hoodie has less open space than a t-shirt, so placement needs a plan. The size chart in our t-shirt print size guide is for t-shirts. Hoodies and sweatshirts have their own print areas, and we confirm the exact size for your model before printing.

  • Chest, above the pocket: the usable space is the band between the drawcords and the top of the pouch pocket. Keep the design above the pocket, because a print that crosses a seam will not lie flat.
  • Left chest: a small logo on the wearer’s left, clear of the drawcords. A good match when the back carries the main design.
  • Back: wide open, but the hood sits on the upper back, so the top of the design starts below the hood seam.
  • Sleeve: a small logo, a year or a number on the upper sleeve.
  • Crewneck chest: no pocket and no drawcords, so the front is open and larger designs fit more comfortably.

Which print method works on fleece?

MethodOn 50/50 fleece?Best for
DTFYes, in light and dark colorsFull-color logos, photos and gradients. Our default for dark hoodies
Heat-transfer vinylYesNames, numbers and simple one-color designs on the back or sleeve
Screen printingYesLarge runs of the same design with few colors
SublimationNot a good fitIt needs white or light polyester, not cotton-polyester fleece or dark colors

For most hoodie orders we use DTF, because it handles dark colors, photos and mixed sizes. Vinyl is a good partner for names and numbers. Our comparison of DTF, sublimation and screen printing explains the trade-offs, and the guide to the best print method for dark shirts applies to dark hoodies too.

Youth hoodies and sweatshirts

Kids have their own models and their own print areas. We list the Jerzees youth NuBlend hoodie, the Gildan G180B youth crewneck and the Jerzees 562B youth crewneck. All three are 50/50 fleece. The youth hoodie has no drawcord, a safety feature on children’s hoodies that its product page notes.

Youth sizes run smaller and are cut differently from adult sizes, so do not assume a youth XL equals an adult Small. Tell us the size and the cut when you order.

Ordering hoodies for a team, church group or staff

  • Pick one style for everyone. All hoodies or all crewnecks keeps the design looking the same on every person.
  • Collect sizes and the cut. A simple list with the size and whether each person needs adult unisex or youth is enough. If you cannot collect them all, read how many of each size to order.
  • Choose the color before the design. Dark hoodies are a favorite for teams and crews, and DTF’s white layer under the color keeps bright artwork bright on them.
  • Check the size range. Not every model goes up to 3XL.
  • Give us the date up front. Most standard orders are ready in 2–5 business days after you approve the design, and the quote confirms the date for larger runs. If the date is urgent, message us on WhatsApp first.

Hoodie mistakes to avoid

  • Designing a wide chest print for a hoodie. The drawcords and the pocket cut the space down. Move the design to the back or choose a crewneck.
  • Letting the design cross the pocket seam. The surface is uneven there, and the print will not lie flat.
  • Starting the back design too high. The hood sits on the upper back and covers the top of the print. Start below the hood seam.
  • Mixing models in one group order. Two hoodies can differ in shade, cut and surface, so the same design looks different. Pick one model for the whole group.
  • Choosing sublimation for fleece. It needs white or light polyester. For cotton-polyester fleece, use DTF.
  • Treating youth like adult. Youth hoodies have their own sizes and print areas, and no drawcord.

Washing a printed hoodie

Turn it inside out, wash cold on a gentle cycle and avoid ironing directly over the print. A hot dryer is the quickest way to age any print, so tumble dry on low or hang the hoodie. Our guide to washing custom printed shirts covers the full routine, and each product page lists the care for that model.

How we help you pick and place

Choose a model and a color, then tell us where the design should go. We confirm the print area for that exact hoodie, prepare the print-ready file and send a mockup of the placement. Nothing is printed until you approve it. You can start with a finished design, a rough idea or only a description, in English or Spanish. Pick up in Houston or have it shipped anywhere in the U.S.

Teams, schools and churches can see how we handle group orders. For bigger quantities, visit bulk and team orders, or browse custom t-shirts and apparel.

Frequently asked questions

Which hoodie is best for custom printing?

For most orders we point to the Gildan G185 Heavy Blend, a classic 50/50 fleece hoodie with a pouch pocket and a double-lined hood, offered in many colors and sizes. Choose the Gildan G125 DryBlend for active groups, or a crewneck when you want the most open space for a big chest design. Every model on our list prints well with DTF.

Is a hoodie or a crewneck better for a big design?

A crewneck. It has no pocket and no drawcords, so the chest is open and a larger or wider design fits comfortably. On a hoodie, the usable front space is the band between the drawcords and the pouch pocket, so big designs often move to the back. Tell us the model and we confirm the print size.

What print method is best for hoodies?

DTF is our default for hoodies because it works on 50/50 fleece in light and dark colors and handles photos and gradients. Heat-transfer vinyl suits names and numbers, and screen printing suits large runs of one design. Sublimation is not a good fit for cotton-polyester fleece or dark colors.

Where should the design go on a hoodie?

The common spots are the chest above the pocket, a small left chest logo, the back below the hood seam and the upper sleeve. Keep the design clear of the drawcords and the pocket seam so it lies flat. We confirm the exact print area for your model and show the placement in a mockup before anything is printed.

Are hoodies too warm for Houston?

Usually not. Houston's cool season is short and mild, and a mid-weight fleece is comfortable on chilly mornings and in air-conditioned buildings. If your group runs warm, consider a crewneck or a DryBlend model, which is made to move moisture away from the skin. Where the product page lists the weight, compare it between models.

Do you have youth hoodies and sweatshirts?

Yes. We list a Jerzees youth NuBlend hoodie, a Gildan G180B youth crewneck and a Jerzees 562B youth crewneck, all 50/50 fleece. Youth sizes and print areas differ from adult ones, so tell us the size and the cut when you order, and we confirm the print size before printing.
