Tumbler Sizes and Mug Sizes: Capacity, Wrap Size and Best Uses

Every tumbler and mug we personalize in Houston, from the 11 oz ceramic mug to the 40 oz tumbler: how much each holds, how big the print area is and which size to pick.

Tumbler Sizes and Mug Sizes: Capacity, Wrap Size and Best Uses

The short answer: if you are comparing tumbler sizes, the 20 oz is the easiest everyday size, the 30 oz carries you through a workday, and the 40 oz is for people who want to refill as rarely as possible. The 24 oz bottle suits the gym and the school bag, the 16 oz is the kids’ size, and an 11 oz ceramic mug or our 12 oz stainless mug is for coffee and tea. The print area grows with the size, from an 8.5 x 3.5 in wrap on the 11 oz mug to 10.5 x 7.5 in on the 40 oz tumbler.

This guide covers every size we personalize at VS Print Studio in Houston: how much each piece holds, how big its print wrap is in inches and in pixels at 300 DPI, and which uses it fits. It also shows how to keep text away from the handle and the seam, and when vinyl is a better match than sublimation.

Which tumbler size should you choose?

Start with where the piece will live, then read the capacity. The table lists what each blank holds in ounces, milliliters and 8 oz cups. Ice and a straw take up room, so a tumbler packed with ice holds less drink than the number on the label.

40 oz tumbler with handle40 oz, 1183 mL5All-day water, long days outside, big gifts

Here is how we would choose in the most common situations:

  • One size for most gifts: the 20 oz. It is easy to carry, its print area (9.3 x 8 in) is close to square, and its product page says it is designed to fit most car cup holders.
  • Long, hot days outside: the 40 oz. It holds the most ice and water, which counts in a Houston summer.
  • A full day at a desk or on a job site: the 30 oz, with a straw and a carry handle on the lid.
  • Gym, school or work bag: the 24 oz bottle, slim and with a flip-up spout.
  • Children: the 16 oz with the sippy lid, the smallest tumbler in the shop.
  • Hot drinks: the 11 oz mug for the desk, or the 12 oz stainless mug when you want a lid.

How big is the print area on each tumbler and mug?

Every piece has a print wrap: the flat, rectangular artwork that wraps around it. The width is how far the design runs around the piece, and the height is how tall it can be. These are the sizes we use, with the canvas to design on at 300 DPI.

PiecePrint wrapCanvas at 300 DPIMinimum at 150 DPI

40 oz tumbler10.5 x 7.5 in3150 x 2250 px1575 x 1125 px

To turn inches into pixels, multiply by 300: 10.5 in x 300 = 3150 px. Aim for the 300 DPI size. The 150 DPI column is the working minimum, and below that the print is likely to look blurry.

The 9.3 x 8 in canvas is the working size for the 16 to 20 oz range. The 16 oz kids tumbler stands about 7.4 in tall (its product page lists it), which is less than the 8 in canvas height, so we confirm its exact print area before printing.

Sizes can vary slightly by brand. That is why we always confirm the exact print area for your piece before anything is printed, and why the mockup shows your design on it.

What is a wrap, and where do the handle and seam go?

A wrap is a design drawn flat that curls around a round object, like the label on a can. The two side edges of the artwork meet somewhere on the piece, and that join is the seam. On pieces with a handle on the body (both mugs and the 40 oz tumbler), the handle sits in a gap the wrap does not cover. The 30 oz tumbler and the 24 oz bottle carry their handles on the lid.

Mug and tumbler wrap templateA flat rectangle showing the unrolled print area of a mug or tumbler, with the handle and seam zones at both ends and a safe area in the middle.Safe area for text and facesHandle / seamHandle / seamWrap width (unrolled)Wrap height
Example: an 11 oz mug wrap is 8.5 × 3.5 in (2550 × 1050 px). Keep key text and faces out of the handle and seam zones.

These habits keep a design readable all the way around:

  • Keep text off the seam and the handle gap. A small shift in alignment can split a letter that sits on either one.
  • Put the main design on the front. The mockup we send shows where the front sits in relation to the handle before anything is printed.
  • Run backgrounds to the edges of the canvas. A color or pattern that stops short can leave a thin unprinted line at the seam.
  • Keep important elements inside the safe area, away from the top and bottom edges.
  • Expect a vertical photo to fill only part of the width. On the 40 oz wrap, a portrait photo at full height is about 5 to 6 in wide, so the other 4.5 to 5.5 in needs a background, text or a pattern.

Size by size: what to know before you choose

Each piece has its own shape, and the shape changes which designs work. Dimensions below come from the product pages.

11 oz ceramic mug (white or color-changing)

The 11 oz ceramic mug is the standard coffee mug size. Its wrap is 8.5 x 3.5 in (2550 x 1050 px): wide and short, like a banner. That suits a name with a short phrase, a row of photos, a pattern, or a logo with a line of text. Its product page says the design can go on both sides or on the center front.

There is also a color-changing mug with a black coating, where the design appears when hot liquid goes in. Most ceramic mugs are microwave and dishwasher safe, but each product page states the care for that mug. The color-changing page recommends hand washing to keep the effect.

12 oz stainless mug with sliding lid

The 12 oz stainless mug is a compact travel mug: 4.44 in tall, with a handle and a lid that slides open to sip and closes to seal. The lid comes off completely for washing. The wrap is 9 x 3.5 in (2700 x 1050 px), the same banner shape as the ceramic mug but a little wider. It is hand wash only and not for the microwave.

16 oz kids tumbler with sippy lid

The 16 oz kids tumbler is about 7.4 in tall and 2.9 in across, with a sippy lid and straw. Because it is so small, simple designs work best: a first name and one clear picture. Busy collages get lost at this size. Its print area starts from the 16 to 20 oz row above, adjusted for the shorter body, and we confirm the exact size before printing.

20 oz skinny straight tumbler

The 20 oz skinny tumbler has straight sides, a clear lid and a reusable metal straw. Its wrap, 9.3 x 8 in (2790 x 2400 px), is close to square, which leaves room for a logo, a photo, or a name with a graphic without forcing a long, thin layout. Its product page says it is designed to fit most car cup holders.

24 oz water bottle with flip spout

The 24 oz bottle is tall and slim: 10.5 in tall (12.5 in with the handle) and 2.85 in across. The lid has a flip-up spout and a small handle, and the product page describes it for the gym, school or work. The wrap is 8.8 x 7.6 in (2640 x 2280 px), the narrowest of the tall pieces, so a compact layout beats a wide landscape one: a large name and one simple graphic.

30 oz tumbler with lid handle and straw

The 30 oz tumbler has a glossy white body, a black lid with a mouthpiece and carry handle, and a straw. It is 9.5 in tall (12 in with the handle) and 3.25 in across. The wrap is 10 x 7.5 in (3000 x 2250 px): enough for a logo, a name and a line of text at readable sizes, which is why it works for staff and team gifts.

40 oz tumbler with handle and straw

The 40 oz is the largest piece. It is 9.69 in tall, 5.49 in wide with the handle and 3.81 in across, with a large handle, a clear lid and a removable straw. The wrap is 10.5 x 7.5 in (3150 x 2250 px), the biggest in this guide. A full 40 oz of water weighs a little over 2.5 lb before you add the tumbler itself, so think about who will carry it.

We list the 40 oz in two versions of the same size: one decorated with vinyl and one set up for full-wrap sublimation. The product page tells you which method you are choosing.

Sublimation or vinyl: which goes on which size?

Two methods decorate these pieces, and each product page states which one that listing uses. Sublimation prints dye into the coating of a white, sublimation-ready piece, so it handles photos and full wraps and leaves no edge to feel. Vinyl is cut from sheets of solid color, so it is crisp for names and simple logos and can go on pieces that are not sublimation-ready, with a thin raised edge.

The 30 oz tumbler, the 24 oz bottle, the 12 oz mug, the 16 and 20 oz tumblers, the 11 oz mugs and one of the two 40 oz listings are set up for sublimation. The other 40 oz listing is decorated with vinyl.

Which size works for gifts, teams and giveaways?

Size matters most when a design has to carry a name, a logo and maybe a line of text.

  • A gift for one person: the 20 oz tumbler or the 11 oz mug. Both have room for a name, a date and a small photo without crowding.
  • Staff, team and church-group gifts: the 20 oz or the 30 oz, with space for a logo plus each person’s name. Collect the names in one list and send it once, the same way you would for shirts. Our guide on how to order custom shirts for a group shows the steps.
  • Party favors: the 16 oz kids tumbler or the 11 oz mug, with a simple design.
  • Business giveaways: the 20 oz or the 30 oz with a one- or two-color logo. Our promotional products page has more ideas.

How should you prepare artwork for a wrap?

You do not have to. Send a finished design, an idea or only a sentence, and we prepare the print-ready file at the right size and canvas for your piece. If you prefer to send a file, this is what works best:

  • File type: .png is recommended (transparent background, high resolution). We also accept SVG, AI, EPS and PDF (vector files are ideal for logos), plus JPG and PSD when they are high resolution.
  • Size: build it on the canvas from the table, or larger in the same proportions. 300 DPI at final size is the target and 150 DPI is the minimum.
  • A quick check: a 1000 px wide logo saved from a website and stretched across a 10.5 in wrap is only about 95 DPI. It will look soft. Send the original or a vector file instead.
  • Photos: send the original file, not a screenshot or a copy compressed by a chat app.
  • White: sublimation uses no white dye, so white areas show the white of the blank. That is ideal on a white tumbler and impossible on a colored one.
  • Colors: a screen glows and a printed color does not, so expect small shifts between what you see and what you get.

For the complete list, read our print-ready artwork checklist, or see the artwork guidelines.

Mistakes to avoid when sizing a design

  • Designing on a square canvas. A wrap is a wide rectangle, so a square image either leaves empty space or gets stretched.
  • Putting a name across the handle or the seam. Move it toward the front.
  • Starting from a small web image. A logo that is 500 px wide will look blurry across a 9 in wrap.
  • Choosing a size without checking the cup holder. A 40 oz does not fit every holder.
  • Expecting white to print on a colored piece. Sublimation has no white dye. Use a white sublimation tumbler, or ask about vinyl.
  • Assuming every brand has the same print area. A tumbler bought elsewhere can differ. Send the brand and model first.
  • Packing too much into a small piece. On the 16 oz kids tumbler, one name and one picture beat a collage.

How we can help with your tumbler or mug order

Tell us the piece, the quantity and what you have: a finished design, a photo, an idea in a few words, or nothing yet. We prepare the print-ready file at the right canvas for that piece, create the design if you need one and send a mockup that shows where everything sits around the handle. Nothing is printed until you approve it.

Most standard orders are ready in 2-5 business days after you approve the design. Larger or more complex orders may need more time, and the quote confirms the date. You can pick up in Houston or have it shipped across the U.S., and we answer in English or Spanish. Start with custom tumblers and mugs or ask for a free quote. For an urgent date, message us on WhatsApp first: selected items may qualify for rush production, depending on workload and artwork readiness.

Before you order: a quick checklist

  • I know which piece and size I want, or I will let the studio suggest one
  • I know whether my design is a photo or full color (sublimation) or a name or simple logo (vinyl)
  • I have my design, photo or idea, and the exact text with names spelled correctly
  • My image is large enough for the canvas, or I will send the original file
  • My text is away from the handle and the seam
  • I measured my cup holder if that matters to me
  • I know how many pieces I need and the date I need them

Frequently asked questions

What size tumbler should I get?

The 20 oz skinny tumbler is the easiest everyday size and a safe choice for gifts. Pick the 30 oz for a full workday, the 40 oz for all-day water and long days outside, the 24 oz bottle for the gym or a school bag, and the 16 oz for kids. If a car cup holder matters, check the body width on the product page before you choose a larger size.

How big is the print area on a 40 oz tumbler?

The print wrap for the 40 oz tumbler is 10.5 x 7.5 in, which is a 3150 x 2250 px canvas at 300 DPI. The 30 oz tumbler is 10 x 7.5 in (3000 x 2250 px). Sizes can vary slightly by brand, so we confirm the exact print area before printing and show a mockup that you approve first.

What is the difference between a 30 oz and a 40 oz tumbler?

The 40 oz holds about 1183 mL against about 887 mL for the 30 oz. It is also wider, 3.81 in across against 3.25 in, and it has a large handle on the body, while the 30 oz has its handle on the lid. The print wrap is the same 7.5 in tall, with 10.5 in of width on the 40 oz and 10 in on the 30 oz. Check your cup holder before choosing the 40 oz.

How many ounces is a standard coffee mug?

A standard ceramic coffee mug holds 11 oz, about 325 mL, and its print wrap is 8.5 x 3.5 in (2550 x 1050 px). Our stainless travel mug holds 12 oz and has a 9 x 3.5 in wrap. Most ceramic mugs are microwave and dishwasher safe, while stainless mugs are hand wash only and not for the microwave. Each product page states the care.

What resolution does my design need for a tumbler?

Design at 300 DPI at the final size: 3150 x 2250 px for a 40 oz tumbler and 2550 x 1050 px for an 11 oz mug. 150 DPI is the working minimum, and below that the print is likely to look blurry. Send the original file rather than a screenshot, or send only an idea and we prepare the file for you.

Can you personalize a tumbler I already own?

Send us the brand, the model and a photo, and we tell you what is possible. Sublimation needs a white, sublimation-ready surface, while vinyl can go on other surfaces. Sizes vary by brand, so we confirm the exact print area first, and nothing is printed until you approve the mockup.
