Cleaning Business Uniforms: What to Choose and How to Brand Them

How to uniform a cleaning crew in Houston: the best shirts for the heat, colors that hide everyday dirt, where the logo and phone number go, extras like caps and cards, and a sample spec to copy.

Cleaning Business Uniforms: What to Choose and How to Brand Them

The short answer: the best cleaning business uniforms are breathable shirts in a color that hides everyday dirt, with your logo on the left chest and your business name and phone number across the back. A piqué polo with an embroidered logo suits owners, supervisors and commercial accounts. A 50/50 tee with a printed logo suits crews that work hard in the Houston heat. Add a cap for outdoor jobs and the whole crew reads as one company.

This guide covers the shirt, the color, the logo placement, stitching vs printing, sizes for a crew that changes, and washing uniforms that meet cleaning products every day. It ends with a sample spec you can copy. For the general plan behind any uniform, see our employee uniform program checklist.

Why does a uniform matter at a customer’s door?

Customers let cleaners into their homes and offices, so they want to know who is walking in. A matching shirt with your name on it answers that before anyone says a word. It tells the customer, the building manager and the neighbor that this person works for a real company.

A uniform also does quiet work for the business. It makes the crew look like one team, it puts your name where people can see it when the van is parked down the street, and it saves new hires from guessing what to wear. It does not replace good service, but it helps customers connect that service with your name.

Which shirt is best for a cleaning business uniform in Houston?

Cleaning is physical work in a hot, humid city, and many crews go from a cool car into a warm house. Comfort and washability matter more than looks. Here is how the options on our list compare:

GarmentBest forHonest trade-offs
Piqué poloOwners, supervisors, commercial accounts, anyone who meets the clientA textured knit, so very fine print details look softer. Embroidery is the usual choice. Check the product page for its cut and sizes.

Gildan G500 Heavy Cotton teeCrews that prefer a soft, classic cotton shirtHolds sweat longer than a blend and can shrink if it is washed or dried hot.
Black polyester teeA light shirt that dries quicklyNeeds DTF or vinyl, because sublimation does not show on black. Some people prefer the feel of cotton.

Splashes of bleach or strong cleaners can leave pale spots on dark fabric, and they are hard on prints too. Keep a spare shirt in the van and rinse a splashed shirt soon. Fabric content and colors vary by model, so read the product page before you commit to a crew-wide choice. Our guide to cotton vs polyester vs blends explains the fabrics.

Which color hides dirt but still looks clean?

There is no perfect color, only trade-offs.

Color familyWhat it hidesWhat it shows
Dark (black, navy, charcoal)Stains and everyday dirtLint, dust, pet hair, pale bleach spots and fading after many washes
Mid-tone (royal blue, teal, forest green)A good share of everyday dirtLess lint than dark colors, but stains show a little more
Light (white, light gray)Very littleStains and smudges show quickly, although the shirt looks fresh at the door

Most cleaning crews do well with a dark or mid-tone shirt and a light logo. A white or light logo reads clearly on those colors, DTF keeps colors bright on dark fabric, and embroidery thread is opaque. If your logo is dark, ask for a light version and check it on the mockup so it does not disappear. Our guide to the best print method for dark shirts explains why.

Where do the logo, name and phone number go?

Use the same places on every shirt. These are our print widths for adult unisex shirts:

PlacementPrint widthWhat to put there
Left chest3.5 in on S and M, 4 in on L to 3XLYour logo, small and clean
Back10.5 in on S, rising to 14 in on 3XLBusiness name and phone number, in big letters
Sleeve3 in on S and M, 3.5 in on L to 3XLA small mark, or leave it empty

The back matters most for a service business, because it is what a customer sees when the crew walks to the van. Make the phone number the largest line after the name. If your customers speak English and Spanish, a short line such as “Se habla español” tells them they can call you either way. Compare the digits with your real number before you approve the mockup.

Height follows the artwork, and women’s cuts have smaller print areas, so we confirm the exact size for every item. You send one logo and we prepare the file for each size. The T-shirt print size chart lists every width.

Stitched or printed? On polos, a bold logo looks best embroidered, and it handles frequent washing. A stitch file is a one-time step per logo and can normally be reused for later orders. On tees, a printed logo carries fine detail and a tagline. If your logo has thin script, a gradient or small text, keep a simplified version for stitching and the full version for printing. Our comparison of embroidery vs printing for hats and polos explains the limits.

Names, caps and the extras that finish the look

  • First names. A first name on the shirt lets customers greet your team by name. On tees, names go on with vinyl or DTF. On polos, ask us whether to stitch them. A different name on every shirt is fine.
  • Caps. An embroidered cap works for outdoor jobs and adds a second place for your logo.
  • Business cards. The owner and the team lead can hand one to a client who asks about the next visit. A standard card is 3.5 x 2 in. See our business card size and design guide and the 1000 standard business cards.
  • Flyers. A 4 x 6 in flyer can go in the folder with an estimate or be handed out in a neighborhood where you already work. The flyer size and design guide shows what to put on it.

Mixed sizes, new hires and reorders

A crew changes, so build the uniform around a list instead of a pile of shirts. Keep a roster with each person’s name, cut (unisex or women’s) and size, and update it when someone joins or leaves. Ask new hires for their size before day one, and order a few spare shirts in your most common sizes so the first week is covered.

When you reorder, send the mockup you approved before. Blank shirts can change or run out, so we confirm that the same model and color are still available. Our guide to how many of each size to order explains how to count.

Add the rest of the spec in plain words: one dark or mid-tone color across all pieces, if each model offers it; first names on the right chest, optional; a roster attached with name, cut and size; a few spare tees in M, L and XL for new hires; and a care card handed out with the first uniform. Send it with your logo files through the quote form or on WhatsApp.

How do you wash uniforms that meet cleaning products every day?

Cleaning uniforms get washed more often than most. A few habits keep prints and stitching looking good:

  • Wash uniforms apart from rags, towels and mop heads. Mixed loads move lint around, and it shows most on dark shirts.
  • Rinse a splashed shirt soon, and keep chlorine bleach away from printed and embroidered shirts.
  • Turn the shirt inside out, wash cold on a gentle cycle, and dry on low heat or hang it up.
  • Never iron directly over a print. Iron a polo from the inside, over a towel.

Some crews wash uniforms hot to sanitize them. Hot water is hard on prints, so tell us if that is your routine and we recommend what holds up best. The full routine is in our guide to washing custom printed shirts. Give every new hire a short care card with the first set.

How we can help with cleaning crew uniforms

Tell us what you do and what you have: a finished logo, an idea or nothing yet. We prepare the print-ready or stitch file, show you a mockup and print nothing until you approve it. Mixed sizes and different roles can share one order. Start with our page on printing for cleaning services, or see how bulk orders work. Pick up in Houston or have it shipped across the U.S., and write to us in English or Spanish.

Most standard orders are ready in 2–5 business days after you approve the design. Larger or more complex orders may need more time, and the quote confirms the date.

Quick checklist before you order

  • My crew’s jobs are clear: who meets customers, who works outdoors, who needs a hoodie
  • I chose a polo, a tee or both, and checked the cut and size range on each product page
  • I chose a dark or mid-tone shirt color and a logo version that reads on it
  • My logo goes on the left chest, and the business name and phone number go on the back
  • I decided on embroidery for polos and caps and print for tees, or I will let the studio recommend
  • I have a roster with name, cut and size for everyone
  • I planned spare shirts in common sizes for new hires
  • I have a care card for the crew
  • I know the date I need the uniforms and who approves the mockup

Frequently asked questions

What is the best uniform for a cleaning business?

For most crews, a breathable shirt in a dark or mid-tone color, with the logo on the left chest and the business name and phone number on the back. A piqué polo with an embroidered logo suits owners and supervisors, and a 50/50 tee with a printed logo suits the daily crew in Houston heat. We recommend the method when we quote.

What color should cleaning company uniforms be?

Dark and mid-tone colors hide stains and everyday dirt better than white or light colors. Dark colors show lint, dust and pale bleach spots, and they can fade after many washes, so pick the shade that suits your jobs. A light logo reads well on dark and mid-tone shirts. If your logo is dark, ask for a light version and check it on the mockup.

Should cleaners wear polos or t-shirts?

Both work. A polo looks more formal and suits owners, supervisors and commercial accounts, and embroidery holds up to frequent washing. A tee, especially a 50/50 blend, is lighter and dries faster, so it suits the daily crew. Many companies use polos for supervisors and tees for the crew.

Where should the logo and phone number go on a cleaning uniform?

Put a small logo on the left chest, 3.5 in wide on S and M and 4 in on L to 3XL, and the business name and phone number across the back, up to 14 in wide on a 3XL. The back is what customers see when the crew walks away. We confirm the exact size for each item.

Can each cleaner have a name on the shirt?

Yes. A first name on each shirt is fine, and mixed names in one order are welcome. On tees, names usually go on with vinyl or DTF, and on polos we confirm whether to stitch them. Send a roster with each name, cut and size, and we prepare the files and a mockup for your approval.

How do I reorder uniforms when someone new joins?

Ask for the new person's cut and size, then send the mockup you approved last time. We confirm that the same model and color are still available, because blank shirts can change or run out, and the quote confirms the date. Ordering new hires in batches means fewer separate orders.
